What to expect from an agency
<=CareerHub=]

Job Seeking

Your agency should take the time to discuss with you what you want from your next role, establishing:

  • what primary skills you wish to continue to develop, and what skills you hope to acquire
  • what industry sectors interest you
  • what kind of environment you want to work in
  • what employment structure (ie. permanent/contract) and what hours of work you prefer
  • what remuneration you are seeking
  • They should be able to advise you as to how these immediate objectives can be achieved, in addition to being able to offer longer-term career advice if you require it. They should be proactive in seeking out roles for you.

    Representation

    You will probably agree that it is unprofessional for an agency to send your resume to clients without your express consent.

    For one, your resume is private and confidential and should only be distributed to those for whom it is intended. Furthermore, it is the agent's responsibility to determine in consultation with you, whether the role is suitable for your needs and skillset!

    Finally, even if the role is suitable, you run the risk of being presented for the same role by multiple agencies. Many clients find this situation a time-waster they can do without, and your chance of winning a position that you deserve may be jeopardised.

    It is therefore very important that you avoid agencies that represent you to clients without your informed consent. Keep track of which agent is representing you for which roles, if possible recording the department, client's job reference number and hiring manager as well as the company and role title.

    Negotiation and Contracts

    Once a hiring manager indicates interest in employing you, your agency should be prepared to negotiate on your behalf to get you the best salary or rate. They should also be prepared to discuss with you the terms and conditions of your contract or appointment and provide any necessary clarification.

    Unicom account managers performance is assessed not only on their ability to place people but also on their ability to provide effective post-placement services.
